B & B
You’ll feel as if you’ve stepped back in time when visiting The Historic Dogtrot House
We are often asked about the name, what is a “dogtrot” house. The dogtrot (also referred to as a dog-run or possum trot) style home was popular in the rural South in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Before the invention of electricity or air conditioning, families would build this style home to take advantage of cross breezes. These homes were built with one side for cooking and one side for sleeping/living and joined together by an open air breezeway. The way the home was designed made the breezeway area the coolest spot in hot summer months and where, it is said, you would find the family dog napping. Hence the name Dogtrot.
While our Dogtrot House has been updated to have electricity and air conditioning, the breezeway is still a perfect spot to sip a cold drink and enjoy the views.
